LAS CRUCES - Area farmers will have an opportunity to get rid of unwanted pesticides during a collection event 2 p.m. today at Crop Production Services, 8601 Highway 478 in Vado.
The event is sponsored by the Agricultural and Environmental Services Division (AES) at the New Mexico Department of Agriculture. NMDA has already hosted seven other pesticide disposal collection events in New Mexico this year and collected approximately 510,000 pounds of unwanted agricultural pesticide products.
"These types of agricultural pesticides can't just be thrown away; they need to be handled with care," said Cary Hamilton with NMDA. "We work with a group called Effective Environmental out of Dallas to collect the product and sort it, and then it's either destroyed by an incinerator in Arkansas or shipped to a landfill in south Texas where it is properly disposed."
