LAS CRUCES - The hit-and-run death of an Anthony, N.M., bicyclist is the El Paso Crime Stoppers Crime of the Week.
Ruben Lemus, 51, was riding his bike to work at Leviton Manufacturing in El Paso at 10:30 p.m. May 6, 2010, when he was struck by a vehicle and left on the roadside in critical condition.
Lemus, a regular commuter, was wearing a helmet, had safety lights on the front and back of his bicycle and was using all the proper safety equipment. He was also riding on the far right side of the roadway, on the 7300 block of South Desert. A passerby spotted him and called police, and Lemus was taken to a local hospital.
After remaining in a coma, he died a month later, on June 8, as a result of the injuries.
Although it is unknown what type of vehicle struck Lemus and fled the scene, investigators are hoping that someone witnessed the incident as it took place on the gateway next to Interstate 10 heading east into town. The vehicle involved would have had a considerable amount of front-end damage.
If you have information about the identity of the suspect and/or the location of the vehicle, please call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at (915) 566-TIPS (566-8477) or visit www.
crimestoppersofelpaso.org. You will remain anonymous and, if your tip leads to an arrest, you can qualify for a cash reward up to $1,000.
