LAS CRUCES - Two full days of activities are planned Friday and Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the flight of Apollo 14.
The Fellowship of Las Cruces Area Rocketry Enthusiasts (FLARE) has organized the two-day event, which will feature a presentation by special guest speaker Milton Windler, who was the Maroon Lead Flight Director for Apollo flights 8, 11, 13, 14 and 15.
Windler also served as the lead flight director for all three Skylab missions.
The celebration begins at 9:50 a.m. Friday in the east parking lot at Aggie Memorial Stadium, and at Corbett Center at New Mexico State University. Model rocketry demonstrations will begin at 10 a.m. with a Mark II launch, followed by a demonstration launch of the historic rockets of White Sands Missile Range and a Mercury Redstone mass launch commemorating the 50th anniversary flights of "Ham," the first chimpanzee into space, and Alan Shepard.
More than 900 students from southern New Mexico are expected to attend the activities.
On Saturday, activities begin at 9 a.m. the New Mexico Museum of Space History, in Alamogordo, with a presentation by Michael Shinabery on "Animals in Space." Windler's presentation on the Apollo program will be at 10 a.m., and that will be followed by an autograph signing session.
