LAS CRUCES - Do you need a "Buns of Steel" workout tape; a bingo cage; a box full of purses; a VCR; a stylish, red top hat; blue silk pajamas, or a large doll house complete with tiny detailed room decor?
Everything but the kitchen sink (though there was a bathroom sink) was available for purchase during Saturday's garage sale to benefit the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley, which continues today.
"We are trying to do some improvements at the animal shelter. We have an infirmary we're still trying to pay some debt off of, and that's what this is for," said Lana Payne, a volunteer with the shelter.
By 11:45 a.m. Saturday about 50 people had stopped by and around $400 worth of items were sold, Payne said. The shelter's goal is to raise $1,000, she said.
"People were waiting outside the gates at 8 a.m.," shelter volunteer Annie Dillenburg said. "It went well this morning and we'll have more stuff tomorrow. I'm really please with how much has gone already."
Barry Dunleavey drove to Las Cruces from Deming to hunt for stage props for an Agatha Christie play that debuts in April.
He purchased a metal log carrier.
"We have a fire place so that will work great!" he said. "We were hoping to find some furniture, some small tables and cabinets, but it looks like those disappeared already. We should have gotten here earlier."
Community members can also bring items to donate, excluding clothing.
